Why the ceilings of the rooms you're in matter


What I’ve Learned In One Minute…

Hi Friends,

Do things that scare you. Like actually. You are only limited by the dreams you're okay with not happening.

This past Friday, I did a mini Hyrox simulation competition at my gym. At first I wasn't nervous. I've done classes like these before and I was going to be put in with teammates around my level, so it was supposed to be purely for fun and enjoyment.

That was, until the coach moved me to a different team that was "more suited to my level." My teammates were now full competition experienced Hyrox guys. The best in that room by far. You'd think I'd be excited, but the first thing that came to my mind was the gap in ability between us and the anxiety of letting them down. I couldn't back down though, so I proceeded to give it all I had.

Within each station, I gave it my best effort and reached a peak heart rate of 190 BPM at one point. My body went into shock, I had an extremely strong headache and needed multiple hours to recover from the experience. It was easily one of the toughest physical experiences of my life. But I pushed through and made it to the end.

What got me though, was watching my teammates afterwards. They proceeded to laugh, get their water and talk about the experience so casually, while I could barely hold myself together.

Values that moment showed me

You are only limited by the ceilings of the rooms you walk into. If I hadn't been put in that team, I wouldn't have pushed myself that far, and I wouldn't now be motivated to push myself to one day reach that level.

The imposter syndrome will come and you may not feel worthy to be in that room. But that's exactly when you gain appreciation for the moment and start to see how much you can actually grow and where the hard work you've already put in can take you.

I am incredibly grateful for that moment and it was one I will carry with me for a long time. It showed me a side of myself that had been dormant for too long.

So, I'd encourage you, find your Hyrox competition. Whatever that may look like for you. Set a goal that genuinely scares you a little and see what you can actually accomplish, because you may be limiting yourself without even knowing it.

TL;DR

I was thrown into a Hyrox competition with people way above my level and it nearly broke me physically. But it showed me that you will never know what you're capable of until you're in a room that genuinely challenges you. The ceilings you walk into become the limits you accept.

Quick Hack: The Define Done Method

For anyone who procrastinates on tasks because they feel like they'll take too long. This one combines eating the frog, the two minute rule and the idea of a minimum viable completion.

  1. Pick the task you've been putting off
  2. Ask yourself, what does done actually look like for this?
  3. Find the smallest, most realistic version of that. Not the perfect version, just the finished one
  4. Give yourself 15 minutes and start there

So if you need to write a paragraph, done is a couple of sentences. Is that possible in 15 minutes? Yes. Start the timer and go. You'll find that most of the time you either finish faster than expected or you're already into it and don't want to stop.

We won the Hyrox competition. After everything I just described, we actually won.

Lesson:

Something I've been sitting with this week is that a lot of the struggles we carry, especially bad habits, we actually choose to keep them as struggles. Not because we don't know how to overcome them, but because they're a suffering we're already familiar with. We know what it takes to beat it. We know exactly what's required. But we keep letting it be our mountain when really, it's an anthill.
